2. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani
Ayan Mukerji’s romantic comedy stars Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor as young people at pivotal points in their lives. When Naina (Padukone) runs into Bunny (Kapoor), their unlikely encounter results in them becoming involved romantically – with consequences that ripple out to Avi and Aditi (Aditya Roy Kapur and Kalki Koechlin).
This film is an homage to classic Bollywood love stories and follows its archetypal themes of opposite attracts: good girl-bad boy with different philosophical views. Intelligent dialogue and offbeat comedy ensure an entertaining viewing experience while its diverse cinematography of varied locations and stunning backdrops provides visual stimulation.
Glitz is added by the lead pair’s sizzling chemistry, while leggy songs and dance numbers highlight Padukone in her element and demonstrate her talent as an actress. Furthermore, it alternates between realistic stance and more outlandish situations typical of Karan Johar productions.
3. Baahubali: The Beginning
SS Rajamouli’s first installment of Baahubali was an extraordinary film that redefined Indian cinema. Starring Prabhas and Rana Daggubati in lead roles, this thrilling adventure flick offers breathtaking battle sequences, exotic landscapes, big-hearted romance and nerve-jangling suspense – as well as its signature Akira Kurosawa-esque battle sequences; storytelling in the grand tradition of The Mahabharata; and massed armies swimming across the screen like The Lord Of The Rings rerun.
The plot revolves around two brothers vying for control of Mahishmati: Amarendra Baahubali (Prabhas), and Bhallala Deva/ Palvaalthevan/ Palvaalthevan (Rana Daggubati). While Amarendra is known for being an accommodating ruler who loves his subjects, while his rivalry with Bhallala leads to war between their kingdoms; during which Amarendra discovers that Kalakeya tribe led by Inkoshi intend to invade Mahishmati. Amarendra uses all his skills and cunning to defeat their enemy while also motivating his soldiers en masse.
4. Raajneeti
Prakash Jha’s Raajneeti is an exhilarating political drama which explores India’s murky world of politics with an ensemble cast including Ranbir Kapoor, Arjun Rampal and Manoj Bajpayee. The movie proved commercially successful while garnering critical acclaim due to Katrina Kaif’s portrayal as Indu Prithviraj’s widow was met with resistance from certain political parties.
This movie takes cues from both The Mahabharata and Francis Ford Coppola’s Godfather in creating an unforgiving depiction of Indian politics. A sharp critique of our system where power corrupts all that it touches. Nana Patekar, Ajay Devgn, Manoj Bajpai and Arjun Rampal all give stellar performances that bring Karma’s journey to an exciting conclusion – while Ranbir Kapoor showcases powerfully his character’s subtle yet aggressive nature – making this film an absolute must for all Bollywood fans!
5. Ishaqzaade
Boney Kapoor’s son Arjun made his film debut with this action-packed love story set against warring political families. Written and directed by Habib Faisal, this feature starred Parineeti Chopra as its leading lady.
This movie boasts of action, romance and drama which was expertly handled by director Anurag Kashyap. Additionally, Amit Trivedi created beautiful soundtrack that left audiences spellbound. Overall the film proved immensely popular at box office as well as providing both Parineeti and Arjun with their breakthrough role.
After an amazing debut performance in her Bollywood debut movie LADIES VS RICKY BEHL, Parineeti is back with another outstanding film Ishaqzaade. Once again she delivers an outstanding performance which audiences are sure to love watching unfold on-screen.
Parineeti shines in Ishaqzaade as the star attraction. Her girl next door persona and fantastic bindas style of acting make her stand out in every scene, alongside Arjun, Kanwal, Amit Trivedi and Hemant Chaturvedi – and of course Parineeti herself! Highlights of Ishaqzaade include an emotionally charged lovemaking scene on an overcrowded train berth and its intense pre-interval scene; however it sags towards its predictable conclusion and comes to an abrupt close at its conclusion.
6. Sarkar
Sarkar is a political action thriller written and directed by A. R. Murugadoss who has collaborated with Thalapathy Vijay several times before on his films. Sun Pictures produced it while Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Radhika Apte, Yogi Babu, Radha Ravi Pala Karuppiah Tulasi also feature as supporting cast.
Ram Gopal Verma maintains that he did not intend to remake The Godfather, yet there are numerous similarities to Coppola’s masterpiece in The Godfather Part II, including several iconic scenes and lines, featuring Amitabh Bachchan in an outstanding portrayal of Subhash Nagare. His performance as Subhash Nagare makes for an amazing movie-watching experience!
This film follows the story of a business magnate who arrives in Chennai to battle local mafia, as well as how his activities impact on his family life and marriage. Vowing to change the system, his actions lead to slow-motion brawls and action sequences which were immensely successful at earning over 265 crores at box offices around India and worldwide.
7. Aaja Nachle
Madhuri Dixit made her comeback to Bollywood with Aaja Nachle in 2007, directed by Anil Mehta and featuring Darshan Jariwala and Raghuvir Yadav in lead roles. This movie became an enormous success both commercially and critically alike in India. It received immense acclaim by critics.
Dia, a dance instructor from New York who returns home to Shamli, India to save Ajanta theatre from mall development, represents modernity vs tradition; between Western- and Indian- culture; between being attached to one’s roots while striving for freedom; between Naach-Gaana vs nritya-Sangeet (naach-gaana and nritya-Sangeet).
Anil Mehta has designed his story so it can easily be interpreted as an updated retelling of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. There are beautiful moments, such as when Ranvir Shorey crumples up a poster advertising Diya’s show before ironing it back out again.
8. Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga
Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga was one of the first mainstream Bollywood films to explore same-sex love, opening up dialogue about homosexuality into public discourse. Although stereotypes play an integral part in its telling, Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga still manages to tell a touching tale of love and acceptance.
Shelly Chopra Dhar’s directorial debut will premiere with this film set to release on 1 February 2019. Sonam Kapoor and Anil Kapoor co-star as father-daughter characters for the first time ever on screen; Rajkummar Rao and Juhi Chawla will also make appearances. The release date for the movie is 1 February 2019.
Trailer for Love Story takes us back to 1994 with its iconic song, 1942: A Love Story” playing in the background; soon afterwards it quickly speeds forward to 2018. While Bollywood may not have achieved as much progress in depicting queer characters that defy stereotypes as Love, Simon, it still makes great strides forward when depicting queer characters who do. Rochak Ali composed its soundtrack, which includes songs such as “Gud Naal Ishq Mitha,” Good Morning,” and more – making Love Story must-watch for its heartwarming performances, progressive theme, catchy title track!
